frequently asked questions
Through the practice of both yoga and Pilates you will experience many benefits. While there are some similarities between the two, the background and focus of each is somewhat different.
Both will improve your balance, flexibility and strength, as well as increasing your mind-body awareness and control. Both have a strong focus on breathing and are great for stress-relief.
In terms of their origins, one is a holistic discipline originating from ancient India, the other a specific physical system devised by a German anatomist called Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.
Yoga incorporates more spirituality and meditation and can incorporate elements of philosopy, science and an ethical way of living. Pilates originated with 34 exercises, largely focused on core strengthening and can incorporate various small and large equipment and machines which allow numerous modifications for different conditions and rehabilitation requirements.
Absolutely yes! Pilates is for everyone, every fitness level, every age, every ability. One of our goals at The Pilates Studios is to make Pilates accessible and personalised so that you are starting at a level that suits you. You will be challenged, but always in an environment that is comfortable, safe and fun.
We also offer a variety of different types of classes, so you can choose the one that you like best, or mix-it-up and keep things really interesting.
Pilates is not just a workout, it's a way of life which can improve your general form, function, health and wellbing. It is through regular practice that you will become more in tune with your mind-body connection and able to experience flow-on benefits through the breathing, alignment and core control that you learn in Pilates. For most people we'd recommend a couple of classes per week, to begin to learn and master the skills that can be taken back and applied in your everyday life. Spruce it up with a bit of variety in your routine and throw in a Reformer, a Mat and a Barre class, all very different but all based on the same fundamental Pilates skills.
Wear clothing that is comfortable that allows freedom of movement but is loose enough to allow your instructor to easily observe your posture and body alignment throughout the exercises. Men often will wear shorts with skins or bike pants underneath.
For hygiene purposes, Pilates grip socks must be worn when doing Reformer classes and are optional in Matwork.
If desired, there are a range of Pilates socks available for purchase from The Pilates Studios at Wellness on William.
It is recommended that you bring water, a towel for sweat and for hygiene purposes, Pilates grip socks must be worn when doing Reformer or Chair classes, these are optional in Matwork. There are a range of Pilates socks available for purchase from in the studio that you can purchase when you come in. A Reformer or Yoga mat are optional and we also sell some great ones if you decide to purchase your own.
You will also be requested to fill in a Pre-Exercise Questionnaire before your session so please arrive 10 minutes early to complete this and meet your instructor.
Enjoy your session!
